What is the cost of a septic tank or a septic tank system? The answer lies completely with the site and the conditions in the ground. Whether it is a new or a replacement septic tank or system, there are a number of variables involved for compliance here in Ireland.
We don’t have a definitive answer when it comes to septic tank prices; it varies from case to case. If the site only requires a septic tank, as opposed to an aerobic / anaerobic septic system then the price of the tank or overall costs are reduced. But today only 2 out of every 10 sites finds site suitability in this manner. The short answer is be prepared to invest in a wastewater treatment or sewage treatment system.
The cost of a new septic system using a pre-manufactured, quality built, certified sewage treatment plant that is CE12566-3 certified will be around €2700 for a normal 4 bedroom home, unless higher values of cleaning are required. In which case that cost will rise to around €3800 but will achieve high levels of effluent that will be safe to discharge to ground water.
But the cost doesn’t stop there. As the EPA requires nearly all domestic sewage treatment be discharged to ground water, a percolation area or dispersion field will have to be built to suit the site assessment carried out by a qualified professional. This can easily match the cost of the unit, and in sometimes be substantially more if the ground is not suitable.
Finally there is the upkeep and annual maintenance cost of cleaning out or emptying the septic tank or sewage treatment system which is normally around €250 to €300 per year based on geography and frequency of visits for inspection. The air pump or blower for the septic tank or treatment unit will require replacing as well, and if the percolation requires pumping a pump will require maintenance on a regular basis. Keep in mind a septic tank emptying cost is applicable as well.
Where are we going with this? Sewage treatment units are quickly replacing septic tanks and can offer higher levels of cleaning with minimal maintenance.
